I love war time novels. This one was so sweet and easy to read. A beautifully written story

3.5 really. Good characters but slightly thin in the telling.

I'll admit I've not finished it, and maybe someday I'll come back to it. I can see the potential, but I just couldn't get into it, and the frequent use of the f-word just didn't inspire me to continue.

A heartwarming story about a boy and his new foster family set in the backdrop of WW2. The cover makes it look like its a romance book but it has no romance. I kept expecting the boy to grow up and fall in love with someone but it just isnt that type of book. I liked this book. Its written in a very british humour type of way. This book is the only lighthearted/funny WW2 book that I have read.

This is a beautiful book that grew on me slowly. The writing is exquisite and subtle and funny; the characters are deeply human, and so finely drawn that I was half in love with them before I knew it. In the greater scheme of things it's quite a small story, but it had a huge impact that immediately sent me off to see what else of Lissa Evans' writing I can find.
