I liked this one okay. I think it was quite slow paced through most of the book. I was just waiting for something to happen but i did read it quickly.

Min does all she can to discover the truth of what happened to her brother. She goes on an adventure through space and unravels several mysteries. Such a good book.

The setting is honestly something out of my dreams. I've long thought about a sci-fi (or maybe urbanized) wuxia/xianxia setting, and this fulfills that to a tee. I think Yoon Ha Lee's aesthetic taste lines up so closely to mine and I'm undoubtedly going to be following whatever he publishes in the future.

This book is really good, but I think maybe it's a little too young adult for me. The style of writing is really perfect for a middle-schooler or even young high-schooler; it's adventurous and reminds me a little of The Ear, The Eye, and The Arm in terms of adventure style. The main character is truly clever and honestly somewhat fearless, but not at all overpowered in a wish-fulfillment sense. She doesn't have especially strong powers; all she has is her wits and willfulness.

But I don't think I'll be reading the sequel, as good as it really was. Like I said, I think maybe it's a little too young-adult for me, as sad as it is for me to say that.

While not what I would normally read, this was a very good story. Stories that take place in outer space for some reason aren’t alluring to me, but the fast pace and excitement that accompanies Min’s story as kept me hooked. I needed to know how she would survive in space with the deception she has to use, if she would find the dragon pearl, and what became of her brother. The writing was wonderfully descriptive to allow me to visualize these other worlds but did not pull away from the narrative. There were a few non-binary characters in the book, but I appreciate that the author did not write gender identity as anyone’s main character feature. Bonus for me — the author reportedly lives nearby in Baton Rouge! Always cool to read a local author’s work.

Edit to add: the narrator of the audiobook did a wonderful job. I was very pleased a woman was hired, since the main character was a young girl.
