I loved this book! I couldn't stop reading and I stayed up all night to finish.

But this book has a reoccurring problem many books I’ve read have lately, a plain MC.

I genuinely could not remember a singular rememberable thing about Lei and her personality, she was more of an audience surrogate than a real main character to me.

A harrowing tale of love and loss. Loss of self and innocence. Some politics and power woven into the story. It is a story of a young woman finding her way through a flawed caste system in which the odds are not in her favor. After meeting what would be described as the love of her life she will go through events that will change her life and the life of those she’s come to love and care about.

Beautifully written and gracefully takes on dark / heavy topics. The plot was captivating and the world building (it’s a Malaysian inspired fantasy) was really cool and was integrated into the story naturally.
