I am a little sad to see this series come to an end. I mean, we all knew this would be it. The end of the road trip. What a fun ride this series was.

I really enjoyed this one. For me, it was a little more emotional than the previous books. I felt more emotionally invested with these two and their journey than I did the others. Maybe it was nostalgia, maybe not. I am not sure.

This book definitely ends the journey just how it should end. I loved that we got some of the back story that we weren't aware of with these two. It made the ending even more bittersweet.

I am not going to say anything else concerning this book. All you need to know that you should most certainly pick up the series, which DOES need to be read in order.

This series absolutely snuck up on me šŸ’˜

I initially put off listening to The Runaways because of its intimidating duration but after getting the ball rollingā€”each story is 15 chapters long plus epiloguesā€”I loved every second of it !!!

So much so that I've already bought all 5 audiobooks (separately) as I finished them šŸ„°

The ending made me cry; it was such a beautiful ending šŸ„ŗ I hope we can see the Runaways again + all their babies grown up in the future.

This book killed me! What a beautiful story, full of bittersweet feelings, longing, regret, and long lasting love that even after twelve years, still ran strong.

The trip with the red Cadillac that started from Boston with Londyn, gets to its last stage with Clara, who drives it from Arizona to its final destination in California. This is where it all began, where the junkyard kids lived in Temecula, California, a place they all swore they would never step on again.

Clara gets the honor of driving the car to Karson Avery, the boy who took care and protected Clara and Aria, Gemma, Kat and Londyn while they lived in the junkyard. All the girls remember him with so much affection because he made those difficult years fun and bearable. So it was just right that the Caddy ends with him.

ā€œAnd Karson. Heā€™d been our protector. The one to make us laugh. The shoulder to cry on. Heā€™d made a bad situation bearable. An adventure. Weā€™d survived the junkyard because of Karson. And the Cadillac was his, a gift from Londyn. I was simply the delivery girl.ā€

I was dying to read Karsonā€™s story and Devney Perry didnā€™t let me down! I loved that we get to read about Claraā€™s, Ariaā€™s and Karsonā€™s life in the junkyard, after Gemma, Kat and Londyn had left. We get to appreciate how little they had but how resilient they were. They made do with what they had, they strove for a better future, worked hard at the menial jobs they had, and they had each other for support and entertainment. Lou, the junkyard owner, comes up as the silent protector, who hid them and kept their secret. As a whole, they all had a love and devotion to the old man, who although silent and grumpy, was kinder than the world they left behind.

We had already met Clara and her little boy August in Ariaā€™s book (Forsaken Trail), and this time we get to spend more time and delight in Augustā€™s awesomeness. Heā€™s such a bright and happy little boy, no wonder Karson fell in love with the little man.

ā€œAugust looked up and smiled before going right back to his game. She drew strength from him. He rooted her. She anchored him. They relied on each other.ā€

Karson was everything I expected and more. Heā€™d left to explore the world only to end up in California again. He had a fleeting relation with Lou, so he got to meet up with him again, after some years past the junkyard time. Heā€™s the same person as before, kind and gorgeous. I loved the scene when he realizes that the Caddy was The Caddy. His surprise and delight, then emotion when he learns that Londyn sent it to him as a gift. Emotions ran high in that moment as in many others instances in the book. I laughed and cried, and was totally moved all the time.

The bittersweet part of the story was the many times that Clara and Karson could have come together during their history, but events impeded their reunion. As Clara said: ā€œTiming was never on our side, was it?ā€

ā€œShe was . . . she was my Clara. Maybe that was why it had been so easy to fall for her, even when Iā€™d known I shouldnā€™t. Twelve years ago. Today. Here I was, still hanging on her every step. Clinging to every word. Every smile. Even when I knew I shouldnā€™t.ā€

I loved this beautiful story, the deep love Clara had for Karson, and the passionate love Karson had for Clara. Through the years, they never forgot, never stopped loving. Itā€™s sad to end this wonderful series, so I was extra grateful for the wonderful epilogue! It ties everything with a very pretty bow!
