I’m rereading this series, and Shadowcaster was very fun to come back to. I like it more than Flamecaster. The book gives more background into the actual fighting between the Fells and Arden, rather than just the politics of the first book. I also adore Lyss as a character. She is a warrior princess, but generally subverts the “not like other girls” tropes. The development of her and Julianna’s friendship really exemplifies that for me. I also enjoyed the romance in this book a lot more.
I am not often a fan of enemies to lovers on different sides of a war, but Lyss and Hal feel more realistic. He is never that loyal to his religion or king, and has been fed lies and propaganda about the North that he unlearns over time. it feels more realistic that he would change sides; he sees himself as just a soldier fighting because it’s his duty. This makes him and Lyss compatible. She doesn’t compromise her views for him, which I liked.
Breon is not as strong a character as Hal and Lyss, but I still enjoyed his chapters.
