I loved this book a lot. It‘s descriptions are incredibly atmospheric and lush while the story is very bleak, brutal and visceral. I enjoyed learning about Argentina‘s history as well as seeing the characters‘ lives play out over several decades. Especially Juan and Gaspar‘s relationship was really interesting. The only thing that bothered me is that the ending is a little rushed and it felt like there were many interesting plot points that remained unresolved. It still was one of my absolute favourite reads this year and has piqued my interest in Latin American literature.

Oof, I don't know where to start with reviewing this. Haunting and original. Also seriously dark and fucked up - very evocative, but there were several parts I had to skim. I think this could have been much shorter. It took me a while to get through it and making progress felt like an effort, at least until the last third or so.

I loved this - argentinian gothic horror with magical realism and historical elements, couldn't ask for more. It felt weirdly like a book version of Hereditary. I was only a bit disappointed by the ending, though not enough to damage the overall experience. Hold my coffee, need to go read Mariana Enríquez' entire bibliography.

There’s a lot to digest here… loved the world building, the mysterious way the lore was revealed (and not revealed) to the reader. Characters were super complex, and I could sense that Gaspar was becoming more similar to his father at the end. The variety of perspectives was really cool and how the stories intertwined with each other. This was truly terrifying at many parts, and disturbing. I also enjoyed the political commentary and class discussion, although I’m not too familiar with Argentina’s history and politics. The writing and translation was really beautiful and macabre, and often chaotic (when it aided the story) I don’t know what my final takeaway is, I’m not sure if I fully pieced together all of the elements of the story. The ending is kind of ambiguous, which I suppose is fitting. One thing I didn’t really get was
Spoiler the intent of having Esteban and Stephen for the name of one character (I know that Esteban is the Spanish translation of Stephen).
Overall, even though it was a long book, it was never a slog and I could’ve read even more.
