I wanted to like this novel but it was hard. It's a second volume in a series, and while it's described as a stand-alone book, I found much of it confusing and hard to follow. Characters come and go, without really explaining why they're part of the story, which to me was a negative. Bree, for example, a young girl appears and later disappears without much impact on the story, although the experience certainly affected Captain Calista. Various androids also appear for extended periods without feeling like they really fit into the storyline. The book was entertaining with its description of this future world of destruction and struggle, the writing was crisp and interesting, and the heroine is interesting. I struggled with where the plot was going and never really felt satisfied. I really don't think it is a stand-alone, so if that's what you're wanting, you may be disappointed.
