Maguire has yet to disappoint me. I'm a huge fan of The Wicked Years series, so seeing he had a new series out about Rain, Elphaba's granddaughter, was exciting.
Tonally, the book is different from the previous ones. It's nowhere near as dark and reflective as Wicked is. This doesn't necessarily work against it. Maguire always does a remarkable job with characters. The Brides are all unique and fascinating in their own right, and the information we learn about their role in this new world is given piece by piece, earned through patience. Rain's personality really begins to develop and grow. And Iskinaary is, as always, delightfully grumpy.
Don't go into this expecting it to be similar to Wicked. Despite the world and characters being the same, the writing and tone is very different. Maybe that will change over the course of the trilogy! Either way, it's a fascinating progression for Rain.
