I highly recommend this book. I can’t completely put into words the way this book made me feel or the way I felt about this book. All I know is that I will be rereading it while listening to the audiobook again. Ms. Toni Morrison has done it again!

In the end it was hard for me to put my thoughts about this book into words. I found some parts really funny, heartbreaking, beautiful and/or nostalgic, but I did find myself quite a few times having to ask “wait, what is going on now, what just happened?” I think things were moving so quickly because of the length of the book, so I would have liked to see some more content in general, but especially showing the friendship between Nel and Sula. Overall an enjoyable quick read, but left me a bit wanting still! (Read for Work Book Club)

I really liked this one! Morrison writes exceptionally, and the way she writes on the traumas of black communities (e.g. post-war) is powerful. The tension between the two women of this story was interesting, and what kept me engaged the whole way through. I liked how it focused on various things and characters, like race, gender and class, but there was just something about it, something I can’t put my finger on, that didn’t hit me in ways Morrison’s other books have.

Morrison and I have a love hate relationship usually. Sometimes her use of magical realism or delusion throws me off the story and sometimes, as it is with this beautiful book, it grabs me and makes me question my superstitions and beliefs! I wouldn’t say this book is without fault, but my issues were mostly in pacing and storylines that I felt petered out unnecessarily. Other than that I was intrigued and entertained!

Toni Morrison is in a class by herself. The writing was beautiful and I loved Morrison's voice. She always knew the exact right thing to say and exactly which words to use to say it. This was a thought-provoking story of friendship, and I loved reading about the Bottom in Medallion, OH and all of the unique characters in the town. This is one I will be thinking about for a long time. I definitely need to read more Morrison.

Sula, girl, oh Sula girl! But before we get into the review, can I take a moment to marvel at how beautifully written this book is!!!???!!! Toni Morrison’s wrtiting style, in all of the books I’ve read by her, have nearly brought me to TEARS. Now back to the review.

What I LOVED about Sula (besides the writing style) was the storyline. The story was very relatable to me, and i believe would reach any woman of all age groups

Sula is a story of two women from the same town, Sula and her best friend Nel. Nel and Sula had two different upbringings but shared the same soul. When Sula returns from college 10 years later, she finds Nel changed or is it Sula that has changed? Will they be able to rekindle their friendship or will it be lost forever?
