I tried my hardest to enjoy HOLIDAYS ON ICE, and even chuckled aloud at "Santaland Diaries," but none of the stories feel connected so much as jammed together with the loose tie of "holiday"—and so everything falls a bit flat. Onto the next book club selection!
Graphic: Ableism, Child abuse, and Child death
Moderate: Death

Ugh. Product of its time i guess. I remember finding some of these stories hilarious when i heard David Sedaris read some of them ten years ago or so, but i found them to be vaguely chuckle worthy to horrible. If anyone is on the fence I'd say get the audiobook version instead of the book because Sedaris' deadpan delivery really adds to his stories (or Amy in the case of the Christmas letter). But if you are a sensitive person and don't like dry, sarcastic humor, you should skip this. Also, some of the wording was ... Outdated at best. Use of the word retarded and "snow negros".
