Suffers from a drag in pacing and characters who are too enmeshed to dig themselves out of disaster. Also, deductions for a long villain speech, but the writing style was promising and the body horror was definitely horrific.

What the duck was this. So many questions, no answers. Like why did this happen?

Elise's best friend Julie has been missing, presumed-dead for two years when she mysteriously returns with no memory of what has happened to her. . .or so she says. Desperate for things to go back to normal, Elise and her other two besties Molly and Mae plan a girls weekend with Julie. But the Julie they meet at their hotel in the remote Catskill Mountains is not the same Julie they once knew. She's a stranger, from her decomposed appearance to her strange new eating habits. As Julie's behavior grows increasing odd, the friends realize that they must uncover the truth of what happened to her. Their lives may depend on it.

The Return definitely delivered on the creep factor. There were a few times where I wanted to stop reading because I was so disturbed, and in the case of a horror novel, that's a good thing. To be honest, I was unsure about this book when I first started it, but I really ended up liking the friendship dynamics between the main characters. I think at its core it was an examination of friendship. All in all, a good read for spooky season!
