This book turned out to be an engaging read for me, although it was not without its flaws. The main character is flawed and prone to making mistakes. Although this makes her more human, I was somewhat frustrated given her training and expected her to foresee certain things.

The unique concept of a warrior midwife appealed to me, especially considering the author's background as a midwife. The protagonist's view of the world through a midwife's lens was intriguing. Even as someone who usually steers clear of pregnancy and infant-related themes, I found myself captivated and somewhat softened towards the topic.

The world-building, the adorable animal companion, and even the plot were pleasing. The story structure is typical of a YA/NA fantasy, but a few aspects left me scratching my head. The protagonist, for all her imperfections, seemed to blunder into some glaringly unwise choices.

Spoiler
For instance, after the fae princess warned her about potential kidnapping attempts on her journey to the fae realm, the protagonist still decided to flee the fae camp and leave a decoy behind. The fallout from this decision was enormous, leading to her kingdom's takeover by the fae as a consequence of her breaching her contract. Instead of her hasty escape, why not fake a kidnapping? It would have kept her blameless and potentially saved her kingdom from a grim fate.

The concept of the fae academy was appealing, but the protagonist seemed overpowered, and her tasks too simple. I hoped her disguise would last longer, but instead, she bested everyone and fled back to her kingdom when the fae discovered her decoy.

Additionally, for someone with extensive medical knowledge and a strained relationship with her stepmother, her father's sudden illness didn't raise enough suspicion. Rather than considering possible foul play or checking for poison, instead the first time she tries to help her father his mind makes her feel uncomfortable so she backs off immediately.

Despite these gripes, the unique concept and compelling world-building make this book worth a look. It offers an intriguing blend of midwifery and fantasy that's worth exploring.

It’s a slow start BUT it’s great once you get 15% in. The magic system is so interesting to me - like the how to magic works and what she uses it for and the idea that midwives are held in such a high regard is so fantastic. I love the demon plot line and everything. The fact the fae know nothing about humans also cracks me up. I truly enjoyed this book and am excited to read the rest of the series.
