I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Connelly does a great job of showing the flaws of the police force and how Ballard toes the line of right and wrong to catch the bad guys. He also treats trans characters with a level of respect that I wasn't expecting in a crime novel. I was disappointed that the first story of this female detective has her being potentially sexually assaulted. It definitely felt like something that wouldn't happen with a male lead but I do want to read some more Connelly before making a full judgement.
Overall, it was a really captivating read and I'll definitely be reading more Connelly in the future.
