This book was very drawn-out and boring; and I felt that there was a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. We were supposed to believe in the main character, but I found her to be very self involved and unrealistic. Also, I was excited to see a retelling of Beowulf from a feminist perspective, but most of the time it felt kind of forced to me. Overall, I couldn't connect with the characters or with the story.

Slow at first but picks up quite a bit about 2/3 in. If you like stories mostly about a journey, inter/intra personal relations, and women/girls reclaiming their strength and power, this is a good one. There is also some grey/fuzzy morals of some side characters that makes them interesting if you like that in characters. But if you want a lot of action, a lot of fast paced plot, skip it.
The only thing I thought was unnecessary was a romance at the end, but overall it was a book I enjoyed a lot.

This book started off a little slow for me, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down! Loved the cast of female characters, their histories, and their relationships. Feminist in the way that the story was just about women who felt real and natural. The author didn't need to scream it from the rooftops for it to be effective, which I liked and admire. Some "feminist" stories simply insert female names and bodies into male character tropes and archetypes, this was very much not that.  Very interesting fantasy world building, without being over complicated or pretentious. Loved it!

This really felt like it was intended to be the first book in a series. Especially at the end. If it had been I would have probably given it a higher rating.
