Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz

Is Frankenstein-esque.

We follow Hazel, an upper class debutante more interested in becoming a surgeon in the 19th century than securing her future by marrying her cousin Bernard. And Jack, a resurrection man. Soon these two cross paths, and just like that of course fall in love…

There’s some dead bodies, and a mystery that is easy to parse out from the start. If you have any remote knowledge of science and resurrection men of the 19th century.

How both Hazel and Jack can be so naive just proves how old I really am. But beyond that it was a pleasant read that made me want to keep reading for the resolution.

The cover is one of the best parts of the book.

This book is for anyone that enjoys a castrated Bridgerton with more of an emphasis on grey’s anatomy than sex. Or for those that enjoy YA Novels.

Well rip my heart out why don’t you!

Hazel Sinnett wants to be a surgeon but it’s 1817 Edinburgh so no one takes her seriously. She finds out about a medical class being held at the Anatomist’s society and decides she must attend. While outside, she meets Jack Currer, a resurrection man, tasked with supplying bodies to the medical theater. Together, they discover a nefarious plot masked as the Roman fever and work together to find the culprit. Along the way, they fall in love and realize there is no one else for each other.

This book was absolutely mesmerizing. In a world where there is so much YA historical fiction, this stands out as a unique take on a decidedly tired trope, the girl in Victorian era wanting to be a doctor. Dana Schwartz has created an immersive universe with vivid and beautiful language and a story enticing to even the most reluctant reader.

Amazing! Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy to review

4/5 ⭐️

AHHH. The entire vibes encased in this book blew me away. The mood, the setting, the overall atmosphere. This book oozes great world building. I love both the characters; however, I don't think it should be called a love story. That part was not front and center, which was FINE with me. The plot had me so intrigued I was focused on everything. With that being said, the plot twist and ending were NOT IT.
