Goth, Mystery and a lovestory (not typically Romance).
Perfect start for the fall-season. A strong and independent female character. I enjoyed it a lot.

DNF'd at 10%!
- felt icky about the MC knowing she will marry her cousin one day (it's possible she will not marry her cousin, but the thought irked me)
- wasn't a fan of the narrators
- didn't like the excerpts from medical textbooks, which were read by the male narrator
- not much of an atmospheric read for since I read Ambrose Parry's novels
Overall, just a big miss!

I have finished both Anatomy and Immortality.
I did enjoy the book but at the same time, it was fine. Like I didn’t utterly love any of the characters but I didn’t hate any other than Dr.Beecham. I actually liked both Hazel and Jack. However, I did find Hazel a bit aggravating from time to time. Jack was my fave.
Still the pacing was a bit all over the place it was fine for the first half of the book and then it got messy. It felt rushed at times (the ending) and very slow in the middle.
I did like Jack and Hazel together but the relationship also felt sudden and rushed sometimes.
The writing style is easy to read and the world was fun. Since I have been to Edinburgh before I even recognized some of the places that were mentioned.
Honestly, though it felt very YA, too YA to me. Every time that I remembered that the main characters were teenagers digging for dead bodies and doing medical work I felt a bit weird. I had a tough time connecting to the characters because of that.
Another Thing where did the sudden magic and alchemy come from? The book was a historic gothic romance and suddenly it's a romantasy? Where did the sudden immortality come from?
The ending bothered me a lot. I was not too fond of the ending of this book.

Beautifully written, and perfectly heartbreaking. I couldn't put it down and I won't be able to stop thinking about it. It has easily made a place on my 'favorite books' shelf.

Re-read 2024: I decided to listen to this on audio since I read it for the first time in 2022 physically, and the audio was lovely with the Scottish accent bringing the book to life! Still really enjoyed it. Currently reading the 2nd book in this duology physically and love being back in Hazel's world!
Original review, 11/27/22:
This book was SO GOOD! It’s a YA book following a teenage girl named Hazel in 1800s Scotland who desperately wants to be a surgeon instead of being married off to her betrothed. When she gets kicked out of classes to become a doctor for being a woman, she makes a deal with a well renowned surgeon. If she can pass the doctors board test without taking his lectures, he will allow her to be his apprentice in his hospital. Enter Jack, a resurrection man who digs up and sells dead bodies for a living. And Hazel needs corpses to study/dissect. Jack teams up with Hazel to not only help her studies, but figure out a more sinister plot afoot in the city.
I loooved the setting of this book, the narration of independent Hazel and sweet Jack, the incorporation of Roman Fever into the plot, society gossip, and the gothic vibe of the graveyards.
I almost wish this had been a bit longer to delve more into Hazel’s family/background, learn even more about Hazel’s studying and give more time for the romance to blossom- and it’s pretty rare I wish a book to be longer!
Definitely recommend picking up this “cozy” YA!
**EDIT: just saw this is going to be a duology! So excited to get more story!!**
