i really should stop being so surprised when Lemire pummels my heart with emotions.

With echoes of Watchmen, Green Lantern, and other classic comics, Lemire's Black Hammer universe continues to pay tribute to the superhero genre while also existing as something that is resonantly unique in its own right.

With a dual narrative of the life of aging hero Doctor Star, Lemire has crafted a Promethean tale about the cost of seeking knowledge, power, and fame. However, at its core--and like much of Lemire's work--Doctor Star is truly a family drama. It is a story of father and son, of time lost and promises broken. It is the story of the beautiful hope of reconciliation.

Lemire's writing rings out on every page, and the artistic team brings another chapter of the Black Hammer universe to life in dramatic fashion. Separate from the core storyline of the universe, Doctor Star is an intimate look at the life of one hero and those he cares about most. Cosmic in scope but ultimately a story about relationships, Lemire has delivered another strong story that will linger beyond the turning of the final page.

Really great! A little cliche for the premise, but well told. It has the Lemirian silver lining to an otherwise tragic story.

Wait, comics aren't supposed to make you cry...there's no crying in picture books! So why was I bawling like a baby at the end of this??!? Zoinks.

An immensely powerful little book. It only took an hour to read, and somehow I think it made me a better person, and reminded me to hold on the people in my life, and to give them all that I have to give. This is why I read.

One of the best origin stories I've ever read. This is one of the best stories in the Black Hammer Universe.

A wonderful spin-off series that, while it doesn't immediately affect the world of Black Hammer, it does help give it another layer of depth and atmosphere.

Doctor Star is a tragedy from start to finish. The typical Lemire feels are here and they are in full force. The artwork accompanies the prose splendidly and from top to bottom I have to say that I most definitely enjoyed this short little mini-series. With only 4 issue there isn't much room for padding and Lemire pretty much gets straight to the heart of the mater that he is trying to tackle.

Loss. Responsibility. Failure. Fatherhood.

For me, those were the main keystones, and while the story might not be full of cheer and joy, I still found it to be enjoyable. Lemire is a heck of a writer and somehow along the way his name is slowly taking up the bulk of my monthly pull lists.

So yeah...this isn't a must read for all you hardcore Balck Hammer fans out there. I mean - you won't find anything here that is immediately necessary to read about to understand the rest of the universe. But you will find something that adds a richness and depth to the world of Black Hammer. A history or a part of at least.

And beyond that...you'll find a heckuva good story too.

Nunca pensé que un Cómic me dejaría con éste nudo en la garganta :( Lemire definitivamente es un maestro cuando escribe sobre el aspecto humano de sus superhéroes. 100% recomenda.
