To think I voted against this for my book club’s most recent choice! I didn’t realize it was written so long ago, as my only knowledge of it was tied to that recent film version. I love gothic novels and listened to this one on audible.

If I didn't ask myself "why would you say that?" at leas 500 times reading this book I'd be totally lying. Wow, everyone was so unhinged on god.

I had a GREAT time reading/listening to this book. I got a free trial on Audible just to listen to this when it got hard because I absolutely thought I was going to drag myself through this but I had a blast!! I'm so sad it's over. I spent my afternoons listening to this madness then spend my nights reading listening to the rain. It was really an amazing experience for me. This book was NOTHING like I thought it would be. It had several things I didn't see coming and maybe it was because I was too entertained with everything that I didn't have the time to actually analyze what could happen next.

The main character is stupid af. I know she is young and she hasn't been all around and doesn't know about anything in life but oh my god, get some self steem girl. I was rooting for her from page ONE and this girl NEVER delivered (except for like 5 pages, I was so proud of her) but yeez, she got on my nerves almost every single page. And that husband was... I don't know. I wanted to read this because Taylor Swift said it inspired her to write tolerate it and that's one of my favorite songs from evermore so of course I needed to see what this was all about and I mean, I do think he could've done more but I don't read this and think "yeah, he tolerates her" like I don't know once everything was said and done, he was actually decent.

All the characters were great and had a purpose which I looooooved because long books have this thing where they involve a bunch of forgettable people that I couldn't care less about and they aren't even likeable, but everyone in here did what they had to do and for that I'm grateful.

I'd love to re read this in a few months, when I forget about everything that just happened and have a blast once again. Thank you Daphne du Maurier and thank you Taylor Swift.

I’m still not sure how I feel about this book. I finished it earlier in the month but haven’t been able to sit down and write a review. I sort of liked it and sort of didn’t like it. I definitely have issues with it so let’s leave it at that for now.

Rebecca is the late wife of Maxim and the bain of the new Mrs. de Winter, who Maxim claims has an unusual name, but it is never given in the novel. Most of her issues regarding Rebecca are self-made based on her lack of confidence and the overwhelming presence Rebecca still has at Manderlay the de Winter home. But not all of it is in her mind, Mrs. Danvers the housekeeper makes sure Rebecca's memory is kept alive.

I often wanted to slap the new Mrs de Winter for not taking control of her own home and Mr. de Winter for not making it clear she could make Manderlay hers. One day I might decide if I like the book but for now, I will stay on the undecided side.

It is so hard to rate this book, especially since my edition borrowed from the library had the Anthony Award Winner Seal and the "Best Novel of the Century" on the cover. When I started, I kept saying "the best?!?!?!" "A century is a very long time". I kept thinking of all the books in the last century that I was sure would be better.

I loved Rebecca! I couldn't stop my mind from closing the book and thinking what old actors I would put in the roles. It was made for film that is for sure. I love old movies and this was perfect for me. This book is filled with psychological symbolism and is so much more than just the words that were written. It absolutely stands the test of time

Best novel of the century - I mean those are some pretty big shoes and they fit - but could you spend the whole night dancing in them? I am not so sure.

I will be adding more Daphne Du Maurier books to my tbr and will now be watching Hitchcock's take on her work.
