This is such cool world building. I love Adam Silvera's books so much and his writting style so much. I also like these boys so much. And their mom. So many of their friends and family are amazing but so many bad things are happening to them. The magic and celestial are very cool and the powers are so fun! Also magic Beasts, all in New York! Very fun book and it's Gay! Highly recommend and I will be reading the rest of the series!

It was an okay book, definitely not as good as the other Adam Silvera book I’ve read (they both die at the end) but alright. The acknowledgments said it’s his first fantasy book and I think that is quite noticeable. The idea was interesting by itself but the world building was unclear at best and confusing at worst. The different new terms were confusing to me and I think another round of edits might’ve cleared it up a bit more. Also the writing was very cringy at times and made the characters sound like they’re 13 and not 18. The ages of all of them were quite confusing as well. Additionally the pov changed almost every chapter, which is fine, but every character voice sounded the same. Emil and Brighton were both a bit annoying and Brighton got more and more insufferable nearing the end because of his YouTube canal. That was going on my nerves a lot.
The end was, well — why the hell? I get Brighton wants fame and power or whatever but somehow drinking that potion didn’t really feel to be aligning up with his characterisation.

I just super struggled to finish it. It was a sunk cost fallacy thing to try and finish it. I can't really say why, I guess a mix of my mindset lately plus the stakes felt low and the protagonist was a gary stu in ways I didn't find likeable, and generally I just didn't find the characters likeable. Idk I guess the suspense felt like figuring out which brother will die at the end of each season of Supernatural.

I don’t always enjoy superhero books, but this was a fun take on superhero tropes. I loved the way that natural powers, powers stolen from animals, and phoenixes all combined in this book. The characters were fun, and the pacing was good. Even the dramatic bits were well executed. I felt a little out of touch with the whole war dynamic for some reason. If you hate cliffhangers, not a good book for you.
