A solid read, although unfortunately the last chunk of the book lost me a little in its pacing, I think?

As a fan of the movie, I never expected this book to be such a profound and inspiring discussion on faith, grief, and parenthood. The fact that this is weaved into horrors and profane obscenities makes it all the more masterful.

My favourite chapters often had no horror elements whatsoever, whilst normally with horror books I'm just waiting for the scares to start.

It is perhaps the only horror book I've read that I'd recommend to anyone who just wants to read good literature. Often genre books get a pass for average writing if the ideas are good, but this book achieves both. It is a good book in its own right, regardless of genre.

Was one of the most obscene books I've ever read actually Catholic propaganda?!?!

The story was more like 3 stars but I gave it an extra star for how much it spooked me and disturbed me. It's probably the most disturbing book I've read so far.

The detective was annoying as hell and I skipped a bit of his dialogue because they were so repetitive and long. Also he's a racist jerk.

Rip Karras :(

This was actually 4.5 stars (how do you do half stars anyway?).

It was creepy and scary and good and tense. The plots is set up slowly, but wonderfully. Many people complained that it started out too slow, but you have to set up the possession. It's all the little events that seem small or trivial and eventually lead up to the big shazam. The author wants you there feeling what Chris or Karl or Willie or Sharon feel. You have doubts and never think possession and that’s where the author has you hooked. You feel for each character and get a sense and feeling of the person. If you were talking to them, you would have the same thoughts. You smell the stench and feel the cold air and fear everyone has when they see Ragen. Father Merrin for example is the epitome of calm and leadership in one person. You only meet him for a short amount of time, but it’s the perfect moment and the right amount of time in the plot to command authority to our reader. Kinderman, you just want to slap to get to the point.

However, the constant changing from thought to spoken word didn’t always transition well. Plus, you have the demon reading thoughts too and sometimes, it was hard to follow. Father Karras was easier to follow, but Chris definitely not.

If you love scary books and movies, read this book and watch the movie. It’s the perfect month to do it! ⚰️
