Honestly I prefer the Midsomer Murders Episodes, and found the unchallenged misogyny and homophobia that was naturally embedded in the story quite hard to bear. Nonetheless, the story ended up gripping me, though I found the amount of names confusing and without context to Midsomerverse I probably would've taken longer. I found the pace picked up in the 2nd section, and then I was almost glued to it till the end, but the first couple chapters were a bit more boring and I read them in chunks. I also found Barnaby and Troy a lot less likeable than in the show, but I'm hardly surprised about this. I was pleased to find Cully being alt and queer coded, although I found it difficult to resonate with her father's view on these things. I found the frequent references to Joyce's inability to cook a bit... bland and repetitive, and quite annoying in the end. It is very clear that Barnaby is quite a non-toxically masculine man, but something about book-Barnaby still threw me off. I'm curious to see how this develops as I read the other books in the series.
