I had high hopes having enjoyed [b:The Rabbit Listened|35248504|The Rabbit Listened|Cori Doerrfeld|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1501511316l/35248504._SX50_.jpg|56599297] and whilst this is still a sweet book, the narrative wasn't quite as strong (for me). This is a story about transitions in a young child's life. From their first day at school, to losing a pet to saying goodbye to a friend who has to move house. All powerful themes in and of themselves (I think my problem was that we swept through these too quickly to attach to them) and Doerrfeld cleverly tries to tell us that with each close of one chapter of our lives, a new beginning presents itself. It's a lovely mantra to embrace but, for me, it got muddled in places.

I also mentioned in my previous review that there is a distance at times when illustrators rely on digital work more than mixed media and in this book Doerrfeld chooses to add more colour and background to the images. These bring with them a smudged blur at times that I just didn't take to. I will say that I never thought Doerrfeld never over-sentimentalised the theme and I liked the fact that, perhaps unknowingly, the gender of Charlie is never clear leaving interpretations (and perhaps transitions) open.

Read for Spring into Reading

If you listen to this as an audiobook the voice actor does an excellent job. The story is very yin and yang. How everything has two sides to it.

Cori Doerrfeld books reminds me a lot of Amy Krause Rosenthals - heartfelt with soft warm inviting illustrations that remind us that in the midst of challenges and changes we will be ok. In her latest gift to readers, Goodbye Friend, Hello Friend, we meet a young girl that has some goodbyes that take many forms - from saying goodbye to her mom to ride the school bus to saying goodbye to long walks, butterflies and the sun. These goodbyes lead to new Hellos - goodbye to your mom hello to a new friend, goodbye to the long walks, butterflies and the sun, hello to long talks by a fire, fireflies and the stars. The beauty of this book is how @coridoerrfeld shows us how we can shift our perspective. A lovely book to help readers see how your perspective on changes and challenges can lead to something positive and delightful.

I love Cori's illustrations. I don't know if it's the colors, the details, but they all draw me in!
For every cause, there's an effect - hellos and goodbyes. A beautiful story about the highs and lows of a young person's life and how one thing can lead into the other.

This was a more substantial book than I was prepared for. Not only is this a simple intro to hello and goodbye, it is an intro to dealing with change and looking for the bright side.
Change can be so difficult for younger readers when they don't know what to expect. Showing them that change happens all the time, even when they don't notice, is really important. To be prepared for difficult changes is an important coping mechanism that can help them prepare for the next new and exciting thing to happen as well.
A really sweet and important story.

Beautiful. Perfect read for any child who is moving or has a friend who recently moved away.
