Brilliant fun read, lots of relatable humour about being a parent of older children/tweens.

Whilst I completely understand how many, many readers have loved this book I'm afraid I just didn't warm to it. It has echoes of Bridget Jones, and when I first read Bridget Jones I was of a similar age, and at a similar point in my life, and I loved her & the fresh style of the writing. Perhaps it was that this felt a little like tired, worn-out & jaded Bridget Jones with kids & a lame husband! I knew it would be sweary, obviously, but it honestly stopped being funny & just began to seem too much not all that far into the book.
I didn't really warm to Ellen either. Yes, she was struggling with many of the same struggles as me - husband, children, family, home, work - but good grief she did make it hard for herself! And so my sympathy kept edging over into annoyance, so instead of finding humour & empathy I kept finding myself thinking 'for goodness sake, get a grip!'
So. That left me not terribly gripped, and so this wasn't a compelling read for me.
There are some really, really funny bits, and some parts that are so spot on they're really cleverly done, but I'm afraid overall this just wasn't the book for me.
With thanks to Net Galley for the review copy.
