I'm re-reading this series after a 15 year break and they hold up better than I could have hoped. The Hunger Games is radically political and is a great social commentary on how war is made into entertainment and so many other really deep themes. I believe the Hunger Games series to be vital reading on how violence truly is a cycle that takes more than willpower to break.

May the odds be ever in your favor while reading these fantastic books!

This book was every bit as good as I remember it being when I was a teenager, and possibly even more challenging. The premise is so dark and sad, but the characters so loveable it's hard not to enjoy the story.

I love watching the character growth in Peeta and Katniss. I will always cry at that one death. Haymitch is probably my favorite character.

The underlying warnings about a people divided are hard to ignore.

My only real complaint with the book is how stiff Katniss is throughout, even when she knows what's on the line. Maybe it's just because I don't relate to her personality but I found myself rolling my eyes at how obtuse she is at times. However, this definitely doesn't ruin the story for me at all.

I was a little hipster back in the day: when I was in middle school, I thought Hunger Games was a lame rip-off of Battle Royale. Oh, how wrong I was. The two properties have the vague structure of their game in common, and that's really about it.

Turns out, the hype was real. Hunger Games IS really, really good. It's a fast read with interesting world-building and a tense story. It's everything people used to say about it. Even though I knew
Rue dies
, I was impressed by how hard that scene hit.
Her time in the story is so short, but she still makes such
a big impact, even knowing the twist. I'm really excited to read the next ones.

There is a reason The Hunger Games launched a thousand YA dystopian knock offs. This novel doesn't just hold up, it is outstanding. Suzanne Collins' control of limited first person and indirect characterisation is outstanding.
