When I first started reading the book I was SO impressed. I loved Armentrout's writing style and found it to be very compelling and detailed. But then...

I felt like I read a whole lot of nothing. I felt the characters were bland, I had no clue what the plot was, the dialogue was basically the characters exchanging words but not really saying anything. To be honest, I was super bored and considered putting it in the DNF pile about half way through. I felt that the first 70% of the book was completely drawn out and DRAGGED. What the author wanted to achieve could have been done without all the fluff. The last 30% of the book? My gods! It was pretty darn exciting. It definitely made up for the first 70%.

In terms of the storyline, I already predicted right from the beginning where the story was most likely heading, but I didn't mind. I had an inkling from the beginning about who the Ascended were and who Hawke was. I do feel like Armentrout did a great job with embedding hints. Although I was able to predict what happened, I loved reading the journey of how we got there.

In terms of characters, I really loved Viktor and Rylan (sad face). I found the men to be pretty questionable, especially the Duke, Lord Mazeen, and sometimes even Hawke. They just gave me bad/uncomfortable vibes. There definitely should be a trigger warning for those uncomfortable with punishment, doing things under false pretenses, and SA.

Overall, I don't think the next book is in my future. I don't think I can put myself through another 600 pages of nothingness.

It's been a while since I've found a story this intriguing and full of great twists. Really liked it.

Poppy might be in my top 3 favorite FMC of all time. She's a total badass on her own without needing a man to help her. I love that she takes what she wants and there is no pinning after Hawke. There is good romance, but it's not even close to being the whole plot. I love the revamp of the vampires and werewolves story, and JLA knows how to create a good world. Also loved the audiobook and the voices used for everyone.

As I was reading this book, I had planned on it being a 3/5 rating, but as I finished this book I found myself enjoying it a lot more. I believe that Armentrout’s world building is confusing especially since this world is quite complex. However, after finding out about the Ascended and the Atlantians, I wonder if she wrote it in a confusing way intentionally. I loved the dynamic of Hawke and Poppy, especially when Hawke was revealed to be Casteel. This book became a page-turned in the last half and I just wish the pacing had been faster earlier.
