Came quite soon after Bel Canto so some comparing went on.
Medical research aspect led to some discussion. Amazon descriptions were generally liked. Some found it dragged on. Ending unconvincing.

It's a bit troubling how many of the characters are little more than cartoons -- most especially Dr. Swenson and Mr. Fox (ugh, Mr. Fox).

audiobook note: Hope Davis' performance is utterly absorbing -- nuanced in a way that the narrative itself might have been. The third star in my rating is entirely credited to how her reading elevated the story experience.

I would probably rate the first 250 pages of this book a 2+, but the last 50-75 pages were a 4.

There were a few points in this tedius, dreary book that made me laugh, but these were too few and far between to even warrant a second star.

The story starts off in first gear and begins to pick up speed with an interesting introduction to the characters, in a situation we would all dread - the death of a close friend. The plot soon stalls when you realise that in general the characters have no credibility, are morally corrupt and have nothing really to offer the reader.

The twist and ending is ridiculous and summed up in the following phrase: worst cannibals ever!
