Clark offers an acerbically witty account of his time during the Thatcher years of Britain, beyond comparison with any other contemporary commentary. He has a mastery of the literary style and a frank honesty about his political freinds and foes that will make readers giggle with delight. His charming demeanour holds behind it a devilish sense of humour which is on full display in his diaries. This would be a highly recommended book for anyone interested in the inner workings of politics or the Thatcher years. Excellent, absolutely excellent

H was going to send this to Oxfam so i intercepted it.

Clark comes as no surprise - he's a Tory bastard of the first order.  Nevertheless, he can write well and gives an excellent picture of what top level Government is like from day to day.  if you're smart enough, you can wing it and just enjoy the nice food.

he repeatedly makes the point that he's a toff, and sneers a lot at those who aren't ... that's the man.  Whether such a close-up account from, e.g., Prescott might be easier reading is an interesting question.  the book covers the Fall of the old witch, and he devotes a lot of pages to that.  Experiencing her fall from within is certainly interesting.

[I once shook hands with Clark's father].
