I’m happy to have found a true cozy series that I’m going to want to continue reading. Hooray!

Here’s what I loved:
• the food, SO MUCH FOOD! I can’t name the last book where food takes centre stage to the extent it does here. Every chapter has something to tantalize readers who enjoy food being part of a story.
• the family dynamic was sweet and funny and full of heart
• lots of suspects, lots of red herrings
• in terms of tone, it was a pleasing combo of lighthearted / dramatic

Howevers:
• I know that it’s a convention of the genre, but it was pretty over the top how the detective latched on and couldn’t let go of the MC as a prime suspect, and also how bad he was at his job!
• Longganisa really needed more airtime
• given that the opening line has the MC comparing her life to a rom com, I really wish the author had done more with that

I’ve read reviews saying people wanted more depth / didn’t love the extent to which you have to suspend disbelief, to which I say, maybe the cozy genre isn’t your cup of tea? I’m still learning about the genre and exploring it, but I find that the cozies I’ve read aren’t about deep themes and believability.

This was fun and I’ll happily order book two when it releases.
