The introduction of the mountain people was great! I suspect the king is a girl. I am excited for the king, Lord and MCs relationship development.

A general rating for the series as a whole, although I'm not quite finished it I love how the world is built. Intense characters, fantastically illustrated fights, and a very real conflict makes this series engaging throughout.

Chapters 1-8

Us humans at the base of society don't give a damn who the king is!

(Review for chapters 1 - 653 as its still ongoing.)

One of the best historical fictions I have read in any medium.

The art is gorgeous, the story unpredictable, and the battles, hoooooooooo the battles, they are epic in every sense.

Kingdom is one of those series that transcends its medium, its more than just a manga, its just a damned good story. It has one of the best battle sequences I have seen in any piece of entertainment with real tactics and constant unpredictable events one after the other. Plus how the author Hara is able to hype these legendary mythical icons of the warring states period up is so talented. Hara is able to introduce a character in one page, give a quick flashback on how epic he is in the other, and by the fourth page he is already a believable (key word) threat against the main character.

Speaking of characters, the villain Riboku, is one of the smartest and well written antagonists out there. His motivations are relatable, his actions are justifiable, and he is just so fucking badass as well. It's hard to put in words how good of a character he is, to the point where I can't even think of one villain out there in literature/entertainment that is as smart and believable as he is.

Also, Kingdom's take on the theme of war is also perfectly done. The way violence is portrayed in gruesome detail as body parts fly all over the pages. And how the main goal of the series can only be achieved through more violence; the war to end all wars, you could say, shows how brilliant Hara really is.

Kingdom is a classic and should be read by anyone that's into historical fiction or fantasy, even if you''re not a manga fan give this one a chance cause its mature themes and believable characters will win you over.

Note: This is my rating and review for the entire series.

Kingdom is an example of a seinen manga that reads a lot like a shounen manga. It carries the dark and mature scenes/themes that a seinen does, but is setup a lot like a shounen. We follow Shin on his quest to become China's greatest general during the Warring States period, alongside child-king Ei Sei who desires to unite all of China into one state for the first time in history.

For a series that releases chapters weekly, the art is outstanding. It's brutal, even horrific at sometimes, but kept me on my toes at every moment.

Being a historical manga, it still keeps the plot moving with an excellent mix of politics and war. The characters surprise you with every move they make on the battlefield, and I have straight out shouted aloud multiple times while reading. Can't recommend this manga enough, hope it receives an official English translation and print in the future and become more well-known.

Extremely dumb, simultaneously obsessed with historical detail yet completely unrealistic, filled with shounen manga cliches, very repetitive .... yet I can't help but love it. Stupidly powerful ancient Chinese generals getting hyped up and fighting each other. Really fun to binge
