Do you know that feeling where you want to re-read a book as soon as you finish it? That's how I felt about this book.

A Court of Mist and Fury had a lot more going on in comparison to the first book. I still feel like things picked up suddenly at the end? But with everything else going on in this book I was honestly okay with it. I loved the characters in this book, I loved the Inner Circle, and I loved all the backstories and new perspectives.

And the ending. That ending had me like

falling down stairs

If I read this when it came out and had to wait for the next book with that ending I would have been real sad. But I don't have to wait, and even though I'm exhausted, I'm going to start the next one anyway, because that's how I feel about this book.

To start - I should've quit this series about 100 pages into this book (and the Throne of Glass series at book 3...). Life is too short to read books you hate. BUT, I already own this whole series and I'm finding a bit of perverse pleasure in hate-reading this drivel and then ranting to my husband about it. So that is what this review will be, a rant.

To recap - Book 1 was a creative fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast with poor writing, a stereotypical heroine, a cringy but pretty compelling romance, and a fast-paced, intense plot. Basically standard YA fantasy fare. Now, in Book 2 we've fully left YA territory but kept all the tropes. The positives from the first are totally absent as this book has a weak, wayyyyy too long plot and very bland characterizations.

SOMEONE get this woman an editor! At one point I realized I could cut out almost half of every chapter and not lose the plot or character development AT ALL. I do not need things repeated to death to get the point! FEYRE THINKS RHYS IS HOT. HE'S ACTUALLY A GOOD GUY. TAMLIN IS A DICK. THE BAND OF MISFIT FRIENDS LOVE EACH OTHER, ARE FUNNY, AND ARE SASSY. Now let's illustrate that a thousand times in case someone missed it! This book should've been maybe 400 pages (if I'm generous).

The gaslighting by turning Tamlin into a horribly abusive douchebag was so frustrating. It's like his characterization in book one was all a total lie. Same for Rhys. Everything Rhys was doing was just a clever ruse to protect people. Why does Maas not realize that Feyre could choose Rhys without beating us over the head with examples of why Tamlin is a toxic dude (essentially forcing Feyre to choose Rhys because to stay with Tamlin would be totally insane)??? I really miss the morally-grey Rhys and the possibility that Tamlin and Feyre could've had a complex relationship instead of this two-dimensional bullshit we're getting served.

Finally, the band of friend serving strong flashbacks to Throne of Glass. I actually kind of like them because they're written to be incredibly likeable. However, the men are repeatedly sexist assholes (OK when it's precious Rhys and his buds, but not when it's Tamlin?) ogling women (that's OK guys because the women like it! But if Tamlin does it it is creepy remember) and discussing how they're going to "dominate" people (in bed and in battle! So sexy and not at all toxic). And there are over ten occasions of them making "rude gestures" to make it INCREDIBLY CLEAR they're sassy, fun, and rough around the edges. Oh and they're all the most beautiful fae that have ever existed because OF COURSE.

I just need a minute to mourn an alternate universe where: Maas had an editor who cared about writing more than money; the plot of this novel that actually mattered (notice I didn't even touch on the plot? It's classic 2nd book syndrome where it's all just setting up the big climax and nothing important happens); and Feyre could maybe interact with someone who is not a beautiful god-like being (imagine - a fat friend! A not attractive friend! A useless-in-battle friend who is just a nice person to be around! LOL never going to happen); and there's an interesting romance rather than sappy, bland "mates" and laughter-inducing sex scenes that are meant to be serious.

OKAY... Can we just talk about this book for a literal second. I am fangirling for Feysand right about now and spoiler, I probably won't ever stop. BRB while I go daydream. This book was unearthly. I loved the first book but this didn't even compare to ACOTAR. Do you know how a sequel most of the time has what I like to call "sequel syndrome"? Which is basically when you adore the first book in the series but the second book just doesn't cut it? Well, this book deserves the highest of accolades and doesn't even give me a thought in my mind to place it in the "sequel syndrome" category. I love how SJM made her characters grow throughout this novel. I felt as though we saw our girl boss of a main character, Feyre grow up and become the character she was destined to be. I thought that the plot was wonderfully done and don't get me started about the Night Court, (Or the High Lord of the Night Court for that matter

Feyre is still boring. Rhys and his friends are much more interesting characters.

So when I first started this series, I couldn't get into the first book and so kept delaying things. But at some point I decided to just power through. And I am glad that I did because then I got whisked away. I binged this series, read this second book almost too fast. My only complaint is that I wish Tamlin hadn't been torpedoed the way he was. Like I get it, and it makes sense, but..whatever haha. I love Feyre and Rhysand.

I just erased my previous review from before I read this book because holy crap this book was phenomenal.

I think I spent a good five minutes staring at the last few lines of the book after I finished reading it.

Can I give this book ten stars?? And do I really need to wait a year for the next one???
