Mason frowned thoughtfully and said, "What was it you wanted to ask me about?"
"Bigamy."
"What about it?"
"I'm married to Hartley Basset."
"So I understand."
"I want to run away and leave him."
"Go ahead."
"I have another man who wants to support me."
"Swell."

First appearance of Hamilton Burger.

Spoiler
Who has an incentive to let the only witness see an empty eye socket behind the hastily-made "mask"?

Who the murderer is becomes obvious early on though the motive and some of the details did not occur to me, though they probably should have. It was hard to believe that the murderer would have done some of the tongs that Perry caught onto that helped him solve the crime.

One of my favorites so far. You do learn more than you'd want to know about glass eyes, though. I'm temporarily a mini-expert before my memory fails me again. Hamilton Burger is introduced for the first time, and as fans of the show or books know, he becomes the main competition in the courtroom. Perry smashes him but soothes it over with an olive branch at the end. I'm sure this goodwill won't hold. A funny thing about this one is Perry is representing almost every character in the novel in some shape or form.

Notable for being Perry's first run-in with Hamilton Burger, this has to be one of the earlier Mason stories.
This one opens with a brother and sister coming in for help. The brother, an insouciant ass, is being blackmailed and his sister is insisting he ask Perry for help. As Perry works the case, the blackmailer, who of course has no end of enemies, turns up dead. And then its a race against the cops who are trying to pin the murder on another client of Perry's, the man with one eye who is looking for the bloodshot fake that has been stolen from him.

Such fun

I love Perry Mason cases. He has flair, and a good brain. And it was interesting this time seeing him become acquainted with DA Hamilton Burger. Paul and Della are awesome, as always.

The series continues to be fun and snappy. Even with my usual listening speed, it seems to take a very short time for me to start and finish one of the books as well as the additional advantage of it being a wacky problem with the oddest of quirks and whatever the ending, the ride to the end is quite different every time.

This time, the narration begins with the focus on a glass eye, the specifications of it and the odd fear of it being used to frame a client. From that point, the water continues to get muddier by the minute with more clients than victims being added to Perry Mason’s list for just the one crime. He makes seemingly off-the-cuff decisions but he helps us by explaining it all in a charming manner and letting us know how well informed he was for the most part! I cannot say much more without giving something away and although I could have zeroed in on the culprit, I was also bamboozled with the sideshow that I did not even try to figure the main perpetrator out! This last part is not the norm with me but I did not feel annoyed with the turn of events. This format works well for the narration and just the right amount of attention to like the experience.
