This one is so hard to review!!

Okay okay, this one is going to be hard for me to review…so here goes nothin’. I LOVE Miranda’s syntax and writing style. It’s elegant, makes you think, and really engage with the story. I absolutely couldn’t get into this book, though, and I’m struggling with why. I really think it was due to lack of characterization. I couldn’t connect or even empathize with anyone in this book so I really didn’t care about what happened. I also think it needed to up the suspense Miranda was attempting to create. If this suspense had been more page-turning and heart-racing, I may have been able to get behind it. I thought the plot was unique and interesting, but overall couldn’t buy in. There were some holes that bugged me, but if I mention them they will spoil for others, so I will leave it here.

Thank you for the ARC! I already have this one preordered!

We all know that Megan Miranda is a queen of thriller and this book just proves it again.
10 years ago there was an accident. What caused it? Who was involved? 9 survivors leave and make a pact, but now there are 7 left. What is haunting them?

The multiple timelines as we are learning about our survivors and then what happened that night was such a perfect way to tie the story together. The tension builds and then bursts like a violent summer storm to our conclusion.

Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed two previous books by this author. Both Such a Quiet Place and The Last to Vanish were four-star reads for me. I liked this one but I didn't love it. This is a slow burner and sometimes that can be a good thing as it adds anticipation but in this case, I found it a little too slow and it just didn't hit the mark for me.

I did, however, love the format of the book, going backwards in time and the two timelines of past and present but I found the large group of characters a little hard to follow and keep straight with the mix of timelines and it was hard to get an understanding of them.

I also found that the ending lacked any element of surprise as I had it figured out before I got to the reveal. Would I recommend this particular book? The answer is no. Would I read this author again? Most definitely.

Lightning flashed overhead, illuminating the darkness around them, showcasing the raging river in front of them; its power unmatched. Thunder boomed and the rain pelted harder… they were trapped here. A storm above them, a coursing river in front of them, and a wall of rock behind them. Was there any chance of survival?

The Only Survivors is a dual timeline thriller following a group of former classmates who survived a tragedy their senior year and get together once a year to make sure everyone is okay.

This was such an entertaining and unique read. Megan Miranda is the queen of slow burn, atmospheric thrillers and this one was no exception. A present timeline told in forward motion with a past timeline told in backwards motion. A unique concept that was thoroughly engaging! I loved learning about each character and seeing the night unfold of tragedy linking them together, all while threats are scaring them in the present.

The past timeline gave me similar feels to In An Instant by Susan Redfearn. If you’re a fan of Megan Miranda’s books or you enjoy slow burn, atmospheric thrillers… then I highly recommend this one!
