I really wanted to love this book. And I still do. Just not as much as I would have expected to. I’ve already watched the movie in beforehand (that’s a bad move, I know) and therefore, the end was no surprise at all for me. I expected myself to bawl my eyes out and be devastated (even though I knew the plot, I am built close to water). The plot twist was simply not there (for the first readers, you will enjoy it).

The characters were lovable. Yes. Kinda. But also kinda not. Even though I like the characters, they were described really flat and stereotypical.

However, I have to admit, that the love story was cute. They had some very romantic, funny and adorable time together (those chats ;)). Yet, the story line seemed a little like instant love…?

Moreover, I wanted to bring up the speed of this book. It was a quick read, no questions asked. Yet, it seemed to fast and racing…? I really enjoyed the little illustrations between the really short chapters, yet, I would have wished for some more details. The relationship of Maddy and Olly may need some more page time to evolve into more.

All in all, I liked this book but I did not love it. I expected more. Still, you should read this book if you are looking for a quick, fun and uncomplicated read.

< read the following spoiler alert >

Maddys mum is an interesting person. I know, she is devastated and all from the death of her husband and son, but I still cannot understand her. I guess no one can unless they experience similar situations.

Oh, and another thing that just occurred to me: the book title never gets mentioned in the book. I am crazy after that shit and this really disappointed me.

The structure of the book is delightfully unique! Little snippets of the main character’s notebook provide a sense of personal connection with her. To understand the story completely, read The Little Prince and Flowers for Algernon first. Then you’ll understand the context which they are mentioned.

I was very surprised by how this book ended up progressing, I don’t want to include any spoilers but I will say the way it went was the only feasible way to tie it all up cleanly. I had no real affinity for Maddy at first, or Olly, I felt as though we didn’t see enough of their true selves, but by the end I sympathized with them heavily. What a stunning chain of coincidences that led to a wonderful outcome. I love when authors include playlists at the end of their books!
