Dark woods, a questionable wizard, a troubled kingdom, a witch learning her power, and a friend.

Novik's work is quick-paced, centered on the heroine, Agnieszka, and how she learns and develops her powers. While contending with callous wizards. Oh, and trying to convince them that, no, really, that dark forest really should be dealt with, and now would be very good, thank you very much.

Features lots of twists and surprises, and much more enjoyable than Novik's His Majesty's Dragon.

Absolutely magical, both literally and figuratively.

The Woods are an evil presence in the valley Agnieszka calls home. The "Dragon", or wizard, keeps them safe in return for a new girl every ten years. Agnieszka is sure that he will choose her best friend, Kasia, and is shocked when he takes her instead. She has magic and he is required to teach her. But he doesn't have to like it, or her, and neither does she.

The book was a slow build for me, as the fantasy tropes were too convenient and not interesting enough. But, as the narrative builds and the world expands the book keeps improving right up to the end.

I absolutely loved this book.
I started with just listening a little bit at bed time, but it som evolved into listening for 2-3hrs before I could sleep. And as it picked up in the second half I just listened more and more and finished the rest in two days.

This was....disappointing. I'm kind of annoyed I spent the time to finish it. The story felt like it lurched along, totally incoherently. It was entertaining, and very creative, but I felt too distracted by plot holes and inconsistent pacing to fully enjoy it.
