What can I say? I am now a master of war! I’m just kidding. I didn’t know that the Art of War was such a short book. This audio book is a no commentary audio. Most books add commentary to what Sun Tsu says. I listened to this in between books, and it was cool. I can certainly see why it’s still studied by those in military schools. It’s form is that of a proverb and then an explanation. A fun way to kill and hour.

I thought this book is something more than a military tactics book due to its popularity but I was surprised when I finally read it . It is nothing more than a book meant for warfare. Nothing more. I don't know how anybody can infer anything more from it. Though there can be attempt to extrapolate its content to some real life problems, but it will be just an egoistic exercise to prove that this book applies to fields other than warfare. As per me , this books is deals exclusively for warfare only.

Sun Tzu seems to be an aggressive war expert who believes in outright attack instead of waiting and maneuvering around . He is full of practicality eg he is in superior strength, evade him.
He believes in philosophy "All is fair in love and war" as judged from this excerpt " All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near i.e army can do whatever they can to achieve their supreme goal of victory.

He is not interested in a prolonged war. So he does not support laying siege to any city /army . For winning the war, he suggests to keep the enemy divided .

There are endless advice for a military general in this novel. Overall I was not too much interested in that So I just skimmed through the book.

"If you know yourself and your enemy then you can always win, if you know only yourself then you may win or lose, if you know neither yourself nor your enemy then you will most likely lose."

Sun Tzu and Machiavelli concur that success is best achieved by fooling opponents with misinformation, deceit and decisive actions. There is no such thing as fairness in war or competition. One has to do whatever is necessary to win. Indeed, one has to be 'Machiavellian' in outlook and action.

"To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself. Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy."

"Energy may be likened to the bending of a crossbow; decision, to the releasing of a trigger."

"March swiftly to places where you are not expected."

"If those who are sent to draw water begin by drinking themselves, the army is suffering from thirst."

"Soldiers must be treated in the first instance with humanity, but kept under control by means of iron discipline."

"Rapidity is the essence of war: take advantage of the enemy's unreadiness, make your way by unexpected routes, and attack unguarded spots."

"When the outlook is bright, bring it before their eyes; but tell them nothing when the situation is gloomy."

The eBook is difficult to read with the translation notes inline with the source text. Overall insightful and good things to reflect on for not only war, but business as well.

I expected this to be better based on the number of “successful” folks who swear it’s a must read.
