I’ve never read anything like it. A narrator (“posing” as the author) very much putting himself into the story on and off, who “knows too much” compared to the mc who “knows too little”. Both victims in different ways, both unaware - or not - in similar ways.

So much is said and unsaid in such a unique way; we are told of how ugly and unintelligent and deeply scarred Macabéa is, and - especially - unrecognising how intrigued the narrator (Rodrigo S.M.) is by her.

- You really have to be in the “mood” for this, it’s not an easy (fly through) kind of read imo even if it is a short one
