A debut from this Author, I liked it a lot! 4⭐️
Though I would have liked more character development for certain characters and more world building so something’s made more sense. But for a first book this was still really good!

This was marketed as something the fans of Gone Girl would eat up, and well I did try to eat it up but then I had to throw it back out because what in the name of fresh hell was this?
Can we stop comparing every deranged female lead crime/mystery/thriller to Gone Girl.
If this book had a teenage protagonist, was marketed more towards the YA genre lovers, it could have been bearable but this was such a drag on, so predictable, it felt like a slow roller coaster ride, waiting for the thrill to come, but it never does.
The author had some weird obsession with people's skin color, it feels uncomfortable to read it. She went to greater extents to explain how "black" or "dark" a person was, or how every bad guy in the book was a person of color, or how the male lead was white minority living in a disturbing neighborhood of, you guessed it, colored families.

You know who would eat this book up? Probably a 14 year old if you tell her it's a dark romance.

I don't know what to say. I was rather annoyed because I knew how this was going to end as far as how this whole kidnapping came about. Still, I kept reading. Wasn't really my favorite.

There is a world in which I give The Good Girl 2 stars and there is another where I give it 4. So I'll unhappily give this a solid 3. It's not my typical fare, but a friend gave it to me as a recommendation and I decided to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised that about halfway through I was riveted and really invested in the story's outcome. There was a lot here to like. The characters' POVs we were given lent themselves very well to the muddied waters of what was actually happening in the novel's central kidnapping. Short chapters and quick bite sized reveals really kept the story moving.

In the end, I was just left a little dissatisfied. There was a minor twist that was teased too much early on so it didn't feel like the payoff I wanted. Some of the characters ended up falling a little flat and were not paid their dues in the end. It was all a little too off-the-shelf. On top of that, there were some strange racist undertones that emerged in the epilogue and that soured me on the rest of the book.

Overall: There was enough here to make it a fun and quick read with a light thriller element. 3.5 stars?

I enjoyed this story line. The characters were a little unbelievable. I don't believe any dad would be that cruel to his daughter after she comes back from being kidnapped, regardless of the past relationship. Also there was a ton of subtly racist comments in it. At one point the author describes Gary, Indiana as a "hellhole," and one of the following sentences is "The population is overwhelmingly black." She connected blackness with crime and evil far too often for my liking.

Probably my favorite Mary Kubica. I’ve read 4-5 others of hers, prior to reading this one. So, I kind of knew what to expect, and ended up being right, but if this is your first Mary Kubica, it’s definitely a great place to start. Still a great book even if you’ve read a few from her. I love how it all comes together in the end and grips you until the last page.

3.5 almost 4
This was a good thriller but nothing more than that. I kind of predicted the ending so that's why my rating is only 3.5, but it kept me hooked and I think this would be an amazing book for someone who's starting to read the genre.
