Damn. This is probably the hardest review I've had to write. I don't think I've ever had so many conflicting feelings about a book; my objective brain - that views books as a work of art - is telling me that this is a masterpiece: Prose, story, character development, plot twists, are all masterfully executed to create a magnificent piece of art.

On the other hand, my emotional heart is screaming at me that there, perhaps, could have been a more satisfying ending and in this, I blame Abercrombie because it is his fault that he created a character who is possibly my favorite character EVER!

So why 5 stars? Well, if a book - and especially one its characters - is so goddamn well written that it leaves me with my emotions so freaking mixed-up to the point that I don't even know what I'm feeling, then it is most certainly deserves Every. Single. One.

(3.5/4) Unfortunately, this book does not live up to the previous two in the Age of Madness trilogy - previous POVs that struggled in those first two books continue to suffer from poor pacing and the feeling that we've seen those characters and their arcs in earlier books in the First Law series. The first half or third of the book is bogged down in repetitive language and scenes - understandably to set the stage for a French Revolution-like setting - that made it not as smooth a read as the others. Several antagonistic characters remain one-note, while other POV characters (one in particular) suddenly become Rhode Scholars overnight. Ultimately the last third and ending of the book salvage the weak start and promise exciting times ahead for the First Law world.
