Moved fast following the characters, captivating, a bit of a whirl of wondering what will come next without having much time to think about it before the next event comes along

Wow. I confess that there were a few times that I almost put this down and DNF'd, but I realized once it was finished that that was part of what I liked about it. It made me...feel things. And think about things, like systemic poverty and the opioid crisis, that made me uncomfortable. The writing, as with all of the Kingsolver I read, was just beautiful and without having spent time in Appalachia, I feel like she really captures the characters out there. The times I was frustrated were when I was watching someone make bad decision after bad decision but that's how it plays out sometimes. This one is really going to stick with me. I must confess that I felt like a huge dummy for not seeing the 'David Copperfield' link till someone else mentioned it on a podcast. An excellent read.

Barbara's done it again and it's my new favorite from her. It's a retelling of David Copperfield, but it definitely stands alone if you're reading without that context. I read this in January and I already think it will be in my top 10 of 2023.
