Remembrance is the intertwined stories of four Black women - Abigail, Margot, Winter and Gaelle - who all possess supernatural powers. It traverses the period from 1791 to the present day and is set in Haiti, New Orleans, Ohio and especially the settlement of Rembrance, a refuge for Black people fleeing enslavement, which is protected from white encroachment thanks to Abigail’s powers. It obviously explores the heinous harm done by slavery, the resistance and required resilience of Black people particularly women, the concept of family, as well as complicated mother-daughter relationships. While several aspects of this story interested me, especially the concept of Remembrance and the role and toll of the Protector, not to mention four powerful women, it didn’t fully come together for me and, frustratingly, I can’t quite pinpoint why. I didn’t dislike this book at all so it may just be a case of not every book being for every reader.
