I went back and forth on if I liked this book or not. I finally landed on not liking it enough to make room on my bookshelf. The ending was predictable and fitting, but also completely unsatisfying at the same time.

I feel like I read the wrong book here, as everyone seems to be enjoying this one and applauding it’s feminist themes and the great twists, but I found none of that in The Wife Upstairs. I can see the feminist themes at play, but they are completely bastardized bow how incompetent and gullible the protagonist is. There are red flags everywhere here, and even by the end of the novel she is just worried about having a lot of money and living a good life. What?? As for the mystery, it took me two seconds to figure out what happened between Bea and Blanche, but I hoped there was more to it. Nope, this is a case where the most obvious answer is the right answer. As for Jane, I kept waiting for there to be a bigger development on her past and what she was trying to gain, assuming she was holding on to a bigger secret, but that either didn’t exist or wasn’t worth developing, making her almost completely irrelevant to the ultimate plot line. I appreciate what Hawkins was trying to do here, but the directionless story and basic writing botched the concept.

This is one of the best thrillers!
This book has been hyped up and I have heard so many people talk about it - and I absolutely loved it, its worth all the hype it's getting.

In the beginning, we meet Jane, a dog walker in a very rich community. She meets Eddie while on her dog walking job. Eddie is perfect - handsome and smart and rich. He is the resident of the biggest house in the community. Jane sees this as a solution to all her problems and romance between them ensues.
But of course, there are secrets - Eddie's wife went 'missing' with her friend about a year ago, and Jane has secrets of her own.
Jane is trying to fit into this new role, in a new group of friends while fending off her own past secrets and trying to figure out Eddie's.

The characters are very well crafted - you will hate all of them!
The story is woven together perfectly, also from different POVs - the audiobook is great since they have a whole cast of characters to read different POVs.
This was definitely a compulsive read that kept me turning the pages. The ending was delivered perfectly and made for a great satisfying ending.

This is a must-read domestic thriller - would recommend it!

not too serious southern suburban murder thriller with some fun plot twists. Didn’t love it but the audiobook passed the time while in the car. I never read Jane Eyre (!) but am more curious now.

I've never read Jane eyre but I've seen the 2011 movie (please don't come for me) and I really didn't like it all that much. This book wasn't amazing but it definitely was good. I like how this adaptation touched more on the insanity of Bea and Eddie instead of just being like "whoopsie, yeah btw my wife is locked up in my attic. lol she's kinda crazy" and moving on. As I said, never read the book so sorry to anyone who did if I'm totally misinterpreting things.

Ahhhhh, I am so frustrated with this book. I liked it but I didn't. I guess I was just expecting more & had high expectations. I was so intrigued at the start, and then I realized that I was bored while reading it. The plot was boring, the characters were boring, the big scary secrets... also boring. There were details lacking in a lot of parts where they were needed, but a lot of unnecessary details & fillers where they weren't. The "twists" were semi-predictable, and even when they popped up, there was no "wow" factor. There were some parts that would get me hooked, and I would keep reading, excited that I would FINALLY start liking the book... and then it would fall short. Sigh.

And I'm sorry, but... wtf is with that ending???? What happened?! I needed details I didn't get!!!! It was one of the lamest endings I've ever read. I even read the alternate ending at the very end of the book, but even that potential ending seemed like it would have sucked. I'm genuinely confused about this book... was it meant to be thriller/suspense? Because if so, it totally missed the mark. I will say it was a quick & light read, definitely a good filler if you're waiting on a book to come out or unsure of what to read next, but want to read something easy.
