Cute but not nonsensical, romantic without being ridiculous. This is a historical romance well done! Would definitely recommend
medium-paced
I enjoyed this so much!! I loved Selena’s character and Lucius quickly grew on me. It was just one of those regency books that gave me all the feels.🥰🫶🏼 So excited to continue to the series!
i have read this once already. where or when or if maybe in a series - book i do not know.
Not for me
I didn’t like the instalove; the two main characters didn’t even have a reason to like each other, let alone love. Nearly all the secondary characters were unlikeable and one dimensional and even the main characters flaws were simply waved away. Selena often agreed with the opinions of her abusers even as she was victimized by them and she never confronted her own classism. The plot threads with Rebecca and the earl were abruptly and incompletely addressed and the catharsis that should have come from Selena confronting her abusers was completely lacking. The plot made it seem as if there were high stakes but everything was easily and simply resolved without consequences. Mercurial Rebecca behaved in seemingly random ways depending on what the plot demanded, one moment wanting to be better the next moment throwing another tantrum.

I continually am impressed with Jennie's grasp on weaving historical bites throughout her sweet romances. I love the feelings of immersion into the period that a book written by her gives me.
Selena's time in society is cut short due to her father's penchant for trouble and gambling away of their fortune. With little recourse, she accepts a position as companion. Circumstances upon her arrival are awkward at best, however Selena handles all with as much dignity as she can muster. Sir Lucius is one complication she does not need.
The moments between the MCs are so sweet, I only want more of them. While I enjoyed their individual experiences, their time together was excellent and made me want to see them together more frequently.
The narration by Stevie Zimmerman is really well done. I enjoyed her performance and would easily recommend listening to her.
Thank you to the author for the alc. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Enjoyed this one immensely as it reminded me of Austen’s writing. Poor Selena has been through so much although I did find her rather annoying at some points she wasn’t really dealt the best of hands. You honestly couldn’t help rooting for the girl and hoping everything worked out for the better by the end.
Enjoyed listening to this. Really just what you'd expect based on the cover.

* Summary: Commitment avoidant Sir Lucas Clavering meets impoverished and disgraced Selena Lockhart when her journey to her first ever position (as a paid companion) goes awry. The two become close as they deal with Selena’s past, her new employer, the employer’s lecherous nephew, a headstrong sixteen year old charge, and Lucas’ family.
* Stats: HR (Regency), MF, no sex, part of a series but stands alone.
* Notes: This was fine… I stopped following along towards the end as the plot and pacing seemed to come off the rails - and generally found that a lot of the plot threads kind of wandered off oddly. It was sweet, it was a little boring, but it was perfectly adequate. I don’t feel any particular interest in returning to the author or series, but I wouldn’t be opposed for any meaningful reason either.
OTT and Spoilery Content Notes:
death of parent, parent with gambling problem and substance abuse (alcohol), 23F/older M, minor injuries, blood, grooming of a teenager by a side character, social ostracism, alcohol, gambling, vehicle accident (carriage)

Fun, light historical romance. I loved the unusual meeting for the romantic leads (and the tie-in for Rebecca as well!). The proposal/marriage felt a bit forceful for my taste; Lucius was right on the border of white knight, leaning towards overbearing and a bit toxic. Overall, I did enjoy the read and look forward to reading the next in the series! (Particularly as Phillipa was my favorite character in this installation - I can't wait to read her book!)
