This book was gorgeously religious. A deeply personal and yet very distanced conversation about metaphysical identity, trauma, and faith. The writing itself swayed in tune with story and it was a pleasure to read. I did find it abstract to the point of confusion at some times, but I see that more as a disconnect between perspectives than a lack of talent.

This was my first Akwaeke Emezi book. It has only confirmed with absolute certainty that I want to read more by them.
Wow, what an original and interesting story while also being heartbreaking and relatable in how specific and triggering experiences that happen TO us can change our trajectory and personality. (How protecting the self can look and feel).

This was my first Akwaeke Emezi novel, but I know it won’t be my last. It’s a painful, but beautiful story of loss, transformation, and an ultimate return to self that had me invested from the very first sentence. The writing is poetic, the characters complex and layered; I would recommend to anyone interested in spirituality, African mythology & folklore.

definitely a heavier read than expected. started off a bit slow, took some time to get used to the settings and the style. the middle third is packed with trauma and deterioration which was quite hard to read. had to really take a few breaks in between. but overall the character building was amazing and they felt very very real. super well written. the writing is hauntingly beautiful. did it make me cry? yes. like how do you read lines like “it was as if staying alive just gave everyone else time to leave you” and not scream cry throw up how do you read i turn loneliness inside out and wear it like a glove and not have your heart break a little how do you
