Perhaps the best New Testament scholar of this age, Wright explores the historical setting of the Resurrection of Christ. Looking at the understanding of death, the afterlife and the idea of “resurrection” in the various settings of the ancient Near East (pagan, Jewish, etc.) Wright argues that the claim of the followers of Jesus was radical and unheard of. Wright begins with an objective tone, and slowly moves through the text toward subjectivity, arguing a level of belief and involvement when exploring the Resurrected God. Admittedly, this book is written with a very modern understanding of history, even if methodology is aware of postmodernisms. But this should not be a deterrent to reading this book.

This could have been 500 pages and been just as effective...for me at least. Even if I want to criticize Wright for the extra 200 pages, his writing makes it ok.
Content is brilliant. Presentation is terrific. Wonderful, wonderful book.

not gonna lie, I did not finish this book. It's a fascinating read, and one you can dip into whenever, but not exactly bedtime reading. I started in 2014 and this January 2018 felt like a good time to time to tidy up my 'currently-reading' shelf. I highly recommend it if you are studying or simply interested in theology. I'm sure I'll pick it up again some day but now is not the season.

my 2nd time through.....this series is very tough reading but it is by far the best and most thoroughly researched historical account of what WE believe. Everything makes so much sense to me as far as my faith goes.

I never thought I would read this book, it took a lot of time to finish this book. I would recommend this only if you are seriously interested in knowing, "What really happened at Easter?"
Thanks to Wright, I understand a lot about the early beliefs of life after death.
I enjoyed his writings on Early Church fathers.
All the way from Paul to Tertullian, they firmly believed and knew Christ died on the cross and bodily rose from the dead.
Resurrection has always been controversial, people in the ancient world knew, just like us, they knew that once a person died, it is a one-way street.
This book inspired me on a deeper level of my faith.
Overall, I really enjoyed Wright's writing and appreciate his work.
