Travel writing as it should be, with a deep historical focus to his insights into the possibilities of 3 key regions: the Balkans, the Levant, and the Caucuses. Though he predicts a slightly rougher century than has taken place so far, his predictions about the Levant may still come true.

Part travelogue but on the whole accessible history of far-flung places. Kaplan is an author who enlarges the reader's world.

I love this book, even though the author pretty much admits that he hates Syria.

Kapalan's journey stretches from Hungary and Romania to the Caspian Sea. He travels to Turkey, Syria, Israel, Armenia and the Caucasus. The book is part travelogue with profiles of people he meets along the way, and part history. I enjoyed this read.

If you're going to judge places based on how close to the West they are, how wealthy the local people, and how beautiful the women, stop traveling and save people the trouble of having to deal with your annoying self.
