I first read this when it came out in the 90s and remembered it being great. The reread confirmed that, it’s such a gripping, relentless book. It has the dark vibe of an EC comic, great prose and memorable characters. It’s also somehow kind of timeless, its themes are so strong and relevant that it feels like it could have been written last week rather than 30 years ago.

The book starts as simple as the plan in the title is supposed to be. After the beginning everything gets much more complicated. I’ve enjoyed the first two thirds of the book immensely, but the finish was quite disappointing. I was shocked, I was entertained and I couldn’t put it down. The last part was rushed and I somehow wasn’t feeling it as I did before. Nonetheless it was a thrilling read, in which conflicts escalated constantly. It had a great perspective on how people in the wrong can convince themselves they are the good ones with some mental gymnastics.

That is what you would consider a spiral out of control. I had no idea what I was getting myself into with that book.

pages flew by. some inconsistent whiplash character moments but the plot escalation and characters' descent into evil was entertaining nonetheless
