For me, it was just OK. I can totally see people who like Alice in Wonderland liking this (it’s not something I really love or hate but I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it) and seeing those elements from the story, and how they were twisted/reshaped was actually what I did like about this book. I just honestly had a really, really hard time enjoying it. I couldn’t focus on it, I kept putting it down and going to do something else. Every time I opened it felt like a chore and that’s my biggest flag for me instantly just not really enjoying a book. Not everything is for everyone, and this one just wasn’t for me.

That being said, just because I was meh about it doesn’t mean I think it was a bad book. I can see good parts to it, I can see all the things that could make it a good book for someone else. So if you love AIW, and you don’t mind a lot of descriptive text (I don’t, but I also get why so much was explained, AIW is very ‘different’ and it’s kooky & weird and whimsical so I think in this case it fit, I just don’t like that) definitely give this a go.

“We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it, and we pretended it could last forever” -Taylor Swift
This line running through my head, like a theme song, all the time while reading this book. Great read! Loved the storyline and fell in love with the characters. Shadow and Alice were both relatable and plot made sense in the nonsensical way of course.

The whole thing felt like Hot Topic culture after Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland came out. Just overdone. Childish. Kept trying to get past the cringe, but in the first 30 pages, we had
Spoiler main character dragged into an asylum, immediately stripped naked complete with attempted S/A, had it described several times how stunningly beautiful she is, mysterious grinning man with fancy eyes that she is immediately and intensely drawn to for no discernible reason,  force fed a ‘drink me’ ecstasy, and dressed up in tiny blue dress further sexified with corset and striped stalkings.
Felt like every middle schoolers edgy phase. Also, the writing was pretttyy bad. I’ve read other books by Roberts that I did enjoy, but this one felt so bland. Lots of telling, not showing.

Tiffany Roberts takes the classic themes of Wonderland and twists them into something brilliantly new. Personifying the Cheshire Cat’s playful, sinister guidance into the character of shadow and crafting an intoxicating romance between him and Alice. Though he’s often saving Alice she never feels damseled. She is strong in her sense of self & resilient in her goals. She saves Shadow as much as he saves her. A beautiful partnership built on friendship and trust.

I felt bereft as soon as I finished this book. I became so emotionally invested in the characters and their story.
I don't even have words to describe how much I loved this story
