This is the moment I realize I'm not interested in winter sports at all. This book is set in Norway, and promises a thriller with great atmosphere and a great story. The writing is really good and it kept me reading, but I was always feeling that this is not the right topic for me.
Since I'm in holidays and I have loads of free time, I read this book really fast! It feels to me like one of those action movies that you watch and you forget about it right after you saw it. They entertain you for a moment and they are forgotten in the next.
There are some good, well written and interesting moments now and then, but overall, the story wasn't very good.
I wish I liked this book, but I have to dislike a read now and then. I can see why many people really enjoyed the book though. It centers its attention in ski and how it is affected by doping. It is definitely something that will interest some.

This had all the ingredients of a great crime novel. Flawed "detective" who is a lawyer about to be debarred; a closed organisation rife with secrecy and nepotism; a small community of elite Norwegian skiers. It is thoughtfully plotted and multi-layered and unravels how past conflicts have grown.
And yet...for me it did not hold the necessary investment in the characters which usually drives this genre. I kept wondering if it was the Norwegian names that I could not hold onto or maybe the translation or maybe this was Holt's writing style that seemed slightly off the beat. There were long sections when the narrative lost pace (in an overlong rather than slow-burn way) and I think that less could have been more.

Selma Falck, die Protagonistin, ist ziemlich heruntergekommen, sie hat ihren Job, ihr Heim, ihre Familie, Freunde – sofern sie welche hatte – fast alle verloren. Sie hat gelogen und betrogen und sieht es eher einen Betrug gegen sich, dass ihre Spielsucht aufgeflogen ist, sie fühlt sich um ihr Leben betrogen und will nicht erkennen, dass sie sich ändern muss. In dieser Situation bittet sie ihr ehemaliger Chef um Hilfe, seine Tochter Hege Chin, Norwegens Langlauf-Hoffnung auf einen Olympiasieg, wird unschuldig des Dopings verdächtigt. Jan Morell macht Selma ein Angebot, das sie nicht ausschlagen kann.
Anne Holts Geschichte ist inszeniert wie verheddertes Wollknäuel, das um Entwirrung bittet. Die Hauptfiguren sowie die Nebencharaktere finden kleine Stücke des Fadens auf und versuchen den Weg aus dem Labyrinth zu finden, und doch gelingt ihnen gerade dies nicht und es dauert, bis sich alles fügt. Dieses Buch ist genial und intelligent geschrieben, die einzelnen Stücke fügen sich ganz langsam zu einem imposanten Großen zusammen. Diesen Weg erzählt die Autorin meisterhaft und es ist faszinierend zu lesen. Die Spannung ist enorm hoch angesetzt, ein Pageturner, den ich nicht aus meinen Händen legen möchte, zu sehr brenne ich darauf, das Ende zu erfahren. Dieses Buch möchte erobert werden, es ist keine leichte Lektüre für nebenbei oder nur zum Überfliegen, es kostet ein wenig Anstrengung, aber die lohnt sich! Der anspruchsvolle Leser, die anspruchsvolle Leserin wird mit einem Krimi auf allerhöchstem Niveau belohnt. Anne Holt beweist wieder einmal mehr, wie intelligent sie schreiben kann – eine wahre Krimi-Queen.
Selbstverständlich vergebe ich hier die volle Punktzahl: fünf von fünf möglichen Sternen und empfehle das Buch uneingeschränkt weiter. Ein verworrener Justizkrimi, mit einer beachtlichen Hauptfigur. Wie schön, das Anne Holts 'Hanne Willemsen' eine so starke und ebenbürtige Nachfolgerin erhalten hat. Ich freue mich auf den nächsten Band der Serie!

Jag tyckte mycket om böckerna med Hanne, så jag var väldigt nyfiken på denna nya serie. Jag blev inte besviken!

Riktigt välskriven historia, med bra person porträtt. Trots att huvudkaraktären Selma har strulat till et lite för sig kan man inte annat än att tycka om henne.
För mig som gillar skidor är det en rolig tvist att historien utspela sig i en miljö med landslags skidåkning.
Vem som har gjort vad är också allt annat än självklart och man får verkligen följa med Selma på en spännande resa där allt klarnas upp efter hand.
Tog lite tid för mig att komma in i boken, men väl där så ville jag gärna stanna kvar.
För mig som gillar skidor är det en rolig tvist att historien utspela sig i en miljö med landslags skidåkning.
