Definitely a product of its time in many respects, this was beautifully told and very creepy. A real treat. I wonder who today is writing with this kind of rich description and metaphor.

Age is just a number, baby.

I think the themes are YOLO and good defeats evil. A little basic, which is fine, I like those themes. But it didn’t really wow me or touch my soul.

It was a bit scary here and there. Not actually SCARY scary. More like creepy and suspenseful.

I liked the imagery and the mystery surrounding the carnival. But as the mystery became clear I lost interest. Something cool would be happening and then it would get muddled by over-writing and generally flat characters. I was bored during a lot of it, sadly.

Bradbury is a great writer though and I definitely want to read more of his work.

That was pretty good. At first I had trouble getting into the book mostly due to the writing style. It was very poetic or roundabout way. Like the effects are described more than what happened often. For example, at one point a protagonist gets pulled along by the hand but it's described like his palm is caught, and wrist follows palm, arm follows wrist and body follows arm.

It took me a bit to catch the hang of it but once I did I really flew through the book. And I really liked the relationships between Jim, Will and Charles. It was very heartwarming.

And the book did a good job of having a somewhat cheesy or corny way of defeating the villains but not really defusing their menace at all. Staying positive in that situation would've been very difficult. And the resolution was sort of corny but still great.

Finally, Charles Halloway is a good dad.
