I must enjoy pain because this book was so depressing, but I loved it so much. It was definitely hard to stomach at times and the subject matter was extremely dark, especially because it hit so close to home. I'm not going to sugarcoat it and say that this was a feel-good kind of book--it was heartbreaking honestly. But it was one that made me think, which I feel we all need at times.
I am in awe that this is Rachel Lynn Solomon's debut. Not only was this book so well written, but she was able to create such complex characters that you could still root for. Adina and Tovah had such a convoluted relationship and there were pieces of each of their characters that I could relate to. They were dealt a tough hand of cards and each of them handled it in completely different ways, which gave me the opportunity to step into each of their shoes. After finishing the book, I am still left with uncertainty as to what I would do, which in my opinion is a testament to amazing storytelling (very TJR-like in my opinion). The sprinkles of romance and friendship were aspects of the book that I also enjoyed, and I loved all the senior year of high school vibes. And of course the Jewish representation was some of the best that I've seen in a long time...I felt so seen.
I'm not sure that this book is everyone's cup of tea, but for me it's one that will be hard to forget. If you're looking for a complicated coming-of-age story with great representation and a heart-wrenching plot, You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone is the one for you.
